My first week flying solo in this job? Let’s just say I was feeling the nerves. The training wheels were off, and I was well and truly in the deep end. Then, out of nowhere, I hear this voice booming with enthusiasm: “Eb, we are making it our goal to be your favourite tenants! You don’t have a choice.”
I thought, thank God, someone’s got my back. And honestly, they weren’t wrong. Longwave Digital is, hands down, the friendliest team you could meet. My mornings always brighten when they arrive for the workday, and I’ve even starred in a company videos (yes, I want to work with them)! The morning coffee chats are never long enough. They’re the dream tenants, and I’m so glad to have them as a permanent fixture in the Mill community. Without them, the Mill would be a little duller—and, well, there’d probably be more crisps around. But I’ll let them explain that…
1. What’s the story behind Longwave Digital? If you had to explain it to a friend who knew nothing about your work, what would you say?
Longwave Digital started in 2020 when Richard, our founder, worked on a video podcast for the first time. Fast forward to 2023, and we officially hired our first team members. Now, we work with creators and businesses to bring their video podcasts to life, helping them tell their stories.
2. What about your work do you really love?
We get to work with some incredible creators, which means we’re constantly surrounded by fresh ideas and inspiring conversations. Plus, we get to listen to podcasts and actually get paid for it! On top of that, we love flexing our creative muscles—especially when crafting unique storytelling intros that make each podcast stand out.
3. When did you join the Mill, and what made you choose your studio space?
We moved into the Mill in September 2023. Before that, we were working out of our apartment living room. As fun and “start up vibes” as that was, we needed a dedicated space to collaborate more effectively and feel inspired—so we made the move.
4. Walk us through a typical day in your life at the Mill. Are there any routines or snacks that are a must?
One of the best things about our work is that every day is a little different. A typical day might involve one team member working on an animated podcast intro while another is deep into editing a long-form episode. We’re lucky to have recurring clients, so we’re always producing fresh content every week. As for must-haves? Music in the background keeps the energy up, and snacks—especially prawn cocktail crisps (if Ebony hasn’t eaten them all!)—are essential.
5. How does having a dedicated studio space at the Mill compare to other places you’ve worked? Any surprising benefits?
I’ve worked in co-working spaces before, but having our own studio has been great. Not having to pack everything away at the end of the day makes a huge difference in productivity. Plus, having a space that feels like ours helps foster creativity and collaboration in a way that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.
6. How do you get to the Mill—bike, walk, car? What’s your favourite thing about the location?
I walk in with my wife, who also works with us. It’s about a 40-minute walk from near the bus station along the canals, which makes for a really nice, relaxing commute. It’s a great way to ease into the day and winddown after work.
7. What’s your go-to productivity hack to keep the creative juices flowing throughout the day?
Since we’re always wearing headphones as part of our job, music is a huge part of keeping the energy up. Having it on in the office—not just for work but for the general vibe—really helps us stay in the zone.
8. If you could wave a magic wand and add something new to the Mill or your studio space, what would it be?
More prawn cocktail crisps—Ebony goes through them way too fast!
9. What advice would you give to someone looking for their first studio space for their business?
Taking on a studio space can feel daunting, especially because of the cost. But for us, having that physical separation between work and home life has been invaluable. It also allows the team to collaborate more effectively, which ultimately leads to stronger creative output. If you’re on the fence, think about how the space will support your growth and workflow—not just your budget.
10. How do you unwind after a busy day of work?
After work, I like to unwind in a way that keeps me both relaxed and inspired. I grab something to eat and catch up on YouTube—sometimes for entertainment, but often to see what’s trending in content and storytelling. Since we work in the YouTube and video podcast space, it’s a great way to stay in tune with what’s working. When I need a break from screens, I take a walk to reset and clear my mind before calling it a night.
And that’s a wrap on the amazing Longwave Digital team—truly the perfect blend of creativity, energy, and warmth. If you’re looking for a space where inspiration flows freely, collaboration thrives, and maybe the prawn cocktail crisps never last quite as long as you'd like—come join us.
